The Frank performs a high-energy mix of original material and some covers of classic rock, folk rock, hard rock, alternative and punk. This 4 piece Canadian band, formed in Red Deer, Alberta, in 1997, is continuously developing a strong following of all ages. With over 4, hour long sets of material, they are arguably the most dynamic and energetic live act coming out of Central Alberta today, switching easily between driving rock and acoustic numbers. Band members are Denver Swainson, lead guitar and vocals, Joe Miller on bass, Sara Page on rhythm guitar and Will Gilgan on drums.
Denver Swainson’s blistering solos and the band’s phenomenal repertoire have become The Frank’s calling card. Originality is their biggest hook as their shows pulsate with their own material and streams of fresh interpretations. Influences as diverse as Neil Young and Jimi Hendrix cannot be ignored. Their appeal, musicianship, personalities, and love of performing has garnered them much praise among their musical peers.
The Frank’s second full-length album, Blackfalds Revisited is available now. Their debut CD, Everything is Normal has been sold out for some time. The Frank is also featured on a compilation CD distributed by ARC recording Studios, showcasing Alberta talent.
In 2003, Canadian Mental Health recognized Swainson’s song writing abilities. His insightful lyrics won a writing contest, and “Everyone Around You”, a song from their first CD, was chosen to be featured in an educational video about coping with mental illness. It has been distributed and sold to schools across Canada.
The Frank has shared the stage and opened for other bands, such as 2004 Juno nominees The Trews, Default, Hawksley Workman, The Headstones, Vancouver’s Retrograde, Toronto’s Staggered Crossing and Carson Cole.
The Frank has long proven they can hold their own in solo gigs. They have played to sold out crowds at Red Deer College FarSide Lounge and The Vat. The band has entertained at the Central Alberta Toy Run and Alberta’s Own Rock Weekend for the past three years. They have shown community support by playing at the Upper Level Youth Center, Alberta Beef Rally, Central Alberta Aides Network Walk, The Tsunami Benefit, Rock The Vote, Canadian Mental Health Video Kick-Off, and various benefits for families in need.
