“Hot Rod Hullabaloo” has been on a tear as of late.....an upcoming album release, a song selected for a national rockabilly compilation CD, and a slew of high profile gigs has put this Saskatoon trio front and center. They have quietly gained the reputation as one of Canada’s top rockabilly bands, bringing their mix of old standards and new interpretations to stages across Western Canada through the past five years. However, their recent focus on their original material has taken the group to new heights. Their first single “Street Racing Man” was chosen for inclusion on “Zombie Night in Canada – Volume II”, released by Stumble Records in October. “We are really pumped about being on this CD – we have played shows with a lot of the bands on the first compilation, like Big John Bates and The Farrell Brothers, and we are really happy to take part in this project.” says the band, which includes drummer Lou Fontaine, guitarist Monte Bergen, and doghouse bass player Cam Ewart. “Our album was also released about the same time as the compilation so we couldn’t ask for a better kickoff for the CD.” The album was recorded at High Voltage Recording in Saskatoon in a very traditional manner, using the old concept of a balance engineer. “We were all in the same room and used a pair of room microphones to record everything live off the floor. Sandy Burnett (Engineer and Producer) would adjust our instrument and vocal volumes by moving us closer or farther away from the mikes to achieve the proper balance, very much like the old Sun Records sessions were done.” The result is the perfect mix of a traditional rockabilly sound, with the modern sound quality expected on a CD. “We could not be happier with the way things have gone. This will allow us to take the band to the next level.” But don’t think that their approach to performing has changed. “We still don’t take ourselves too seriously – we have a blast playing this type of music and I think that really comes across to the audience.”
